PhotoDynamic Therapy for Acne and Sun Damage
PhotoDynamic Therapy (PDT) is a treatment that is performed with a topical photosensitizing agent called Levulan® which is applied to your skin and then activated with the correct wavelength of light. Treatment is performed in conjunction with IPL PhotoFacial. The treatment is used to treat stubborn acne vulgaris, acne Rosacea, reduce oil glands, and minimize pores. PDT also removes precancerous spots called Actinic Keratoses and improves fine lines, sun damaged skin, blotchy pigmentation, and rough skin patches. Two to three PhotoDynamic treatments will produce the same results as four to five IPL PhotoFacial treatments.
How much improvement can I expect?
Active acne usually improves dramatically with several PDT treatments. People with severely sun damaged skin that is manifested by Actinic Keratoses, texture, and tone changes may see excellent results. It is also possible to see an improvement in large pores and pitted acne scars.
How many treatments will it take to see the best results?
For maximum improvement, a series of three treatments that are placed two to four weeks apart is most effective. To maintain the improved appearance of your skin, maintenance treatments can be done at periodic intervals in the future.
How will I look after treatment?
Following PhotoDynamic Therapy, the area that has been treated can appear red with some peeling for two to seven days. Temporary swelling around the eyes and of the lips can occur for a few days. Some people have an exuberant response to PDT and experience marked redness of their skin. Liver spots, or darkly pigmented patches, can become temporarily darker and then peel off leaving normal skin around seven to ten days after treatment. Within a few weeks, your skin will be smooth, clear and much improved.
