Ok, so your mom was right. The multi-colored, fire-breathing dragon that wraps its orange flames around your bicep and down your wrist is now getting in the way of your upcoming corporate interview. Or, maybe the name of your “ex” inscribed inside a heart on your left shoulder blade is really starting to aggravate your new love. Even worse, perhaps your kids are starting to ask why you have the word “Juicy” written across your lower back in large, curvy letters. What’s a youthful free-spirit-turned-responsible adult to do?

Each year in this country, millions of people acquire a tattoo. It is estimated that 50% of those people will later regret this decision. Certainly, we’ve all done something in our lives we wish we could change – “would’ve, could’ve, should’ve” is a game we all play at one time or another. Sometimes, it’s just a matter of wishing you hadn’t eaten that second helping of dessert. Sometimes, however, our choices have far more permanent consequences….such as the decision to get a tattoo.

For years, people had little recourse, save invasive attempts at removing the offending mark, such as dermabrasion, which involves literally sanding down the skin in an attempt to remove the tattoo. Another option was surgery, in which the tattoo was actually cut out of the body and the skin sewn back together. These methods were painful, invasive and almost always left a scar in the place of the tattoo. Today, new laser tattoo removal technology is helping people of all ages rid themselves of tattoos that, for whatever reason, no longer fit with their lifestyle.

How does Laser Tattoo Removal Work?

Tattoos are meant to be permanent, so removing them is difficult. Over 100 tattoo inks are in use today and none of them are regulated by the FDA. Needless to say, it is unlikely that you’ll find anyone to guarantee a tattoo can be completely removed. Nevertheless, new advancements in laser technology available at BodyLase Skin Spa offer great hope for those who wish to rid themselves of a tattoo.

Laser tattoo removal is an exciting development because it offers a bloodless, low risk method for removing tattoos. The laser light passes through the skin and selectively targets the tattoo ink and fragments it. Later, the body’s scavenger cells remove the pigment residue. Several treatments are needed for complete tattoo removal. The number of treatments depends on the type of ink used, the color of ink (black and dark blue inks are the easiest to remove, yellow and green inks are the hardest), the size, age and the location of the tattoo. Most treatments take only about 15 minutes and are spaced 4-8 weeks apart.

Does it Hurt?

You didn’t think it would be easy, now did you? Laser tattoo removal can be uncomfortable, but several methods are used to reduce the discomfort. At BodyLase, we use ice and cold spray to numb the area; topical numbing cream may also be applied. Following the treatment, an antibacterial ointment and gauze dressing is applied. The skin will feel sunburned for a few days and may remain red for a few weeks. A light scab will usually form over the tattoo after each treatment. After healing, the tattoo ink will gradually fade.

How Much does it Cost to Remove the Tattoo?

Here’s where the real pain comes in – removing a tattoo is significantly more expensive than getting one. At BodyLase, each treatment costs $299 (prices increase for tattoos that are larger than average size) and several treatments are required. Thankfully, however, the tattoo will fade with each treatment and, since treatments are spaced every couple of months, the cost is spread out over time.
